Since I posted my favorite 5 TED Talks for Digital Marketers earlier this month, I thought it was only natural to make a list for Web Designers since we are as passionate about great web design as we are about online marketing.

With presentations focusing on design and creativity, you are sure to be inspired by these TED Talks.

David Kelley: How to build your creative confidence

David Kelley gives an inspiring talk arguing that we all are creative. David offers examples from his childhood and career on the importance of building the confidence to create and combatting judgment while doing so.

One great quote from his talk is “If [people] stick with the process, they end up doing amazing things and they surprise themselves just how innovative they and their teams really are.

Don Norman: 3 ways good design makes you happy

Don Norman believes happiness in design leads to better creativity and problem-solving. Using the example of a gold-plated orange juicer and a ripple effect ping pong table, Don explains how important designing to appeal to human emotion is.

His most used words in the talk are “neat” and “fun,” which fits this subject perfectly.

Renny Gleeson: 404, The story of a page not found

Renny Gleeson starts his talk by saying 404 pages have the stigma of being annoying because they feel like a broken relationship. He even goes as far to say it can feel like a slap in the face during your search experience.

404 pages can be a huge missed opportunity. Take advantage of the error page’s real estate and create a compelling design with interesting content that keeps the attention of your audience.

Jinsop Lee: Design for all 5 senses

Jinsop Lee is passionate about design driven by the 5 senses. Design should not only look great but feel great, sound great, and so on. He keeps a 5 senses diary and plots points on a graph to measure how satisfying designs are to each of his 5 senses.

His results make this talk well worth the watch. Disclaimer: some themes may be NSFW so watch at your own discretion.

Tim Brown: Tales of creativity and play

In this talk, Tim Brown urges designers to incorporate creative play into their everyday life. Tim argues that the fear of being embarrassed by sharing our ideas can cause us to be conservative in our thinking, which decreases our creative freedom.

He gives many examples of ways to play with creative ideas without fear of judgment.

So there it is — a list of five of our favorite web design TED Talks.
